Low wind drift arrow points
Aerodynamic drag slows an arrow down and causes the arrow to drift in wind. About 70-75% of an arrow’s aerodynamic drag comes from air flow along the arrow shaft. The rest comes from the fletching, nock and point. Air flow along the front portion of the shaft is especially important.
Air flow along the front portion of the shaft can either be smooth or turbulent – the drag is much lower if it is smooth flow. However, for many (perhaps most) arrow point profiles the flow will be turbulent. By carefully selecting the arrow point profile smooth flow can be maintained for that portion of the shaft (although regardless of point profile the flow will be turbulent towards the rear of the shaft).
For a typical recurve archer at 70 metres the benefit is approximately an 11% reduction in wind drift. For a compound archer at 50 metres the benefit is approximately 6%. This is important because wind is not constant but varies from shot to shot – reducing the drift results in smaller group sizes.
